Dulce Ortega

Navigating the TennCare system can be complex for a family with one child, let alone seven. Dulce Ortega of La Vergne, knows this better than anyone. In 2020, the Tennessee Justice Center helped Dulce and her family enroll in TennCare, including their baby girl on the way, and assisted them in getting their medical bills reimbursed. This enabled her children to access needed physical and mental health care.   

Dulce and her family have been in Tennessee for eighteen years. They love where they live and the life they have built here. When they first came to the United States, both Dulce and her husband worked, but soon, being a full-time employee at a restaurant as well as a full-time mom became a heavy load to endure. To compensate, her husband Ismael now works regular overtime at his job to sustain the family.   

Tennessee has proven to be a great place for such a loving family to live. Dulce and her family spend a lot of time together going to the park, going to church, and enjoying time outside together as a family. On weekends, the kids, whom Dulce describes as “happy-go-lucky,” love to play soccer together in their front yard.  

Being a mother has meant the world to Dulce. “Being a mother is very difficult, but a very beautiful thing. To take care of them, to have them depend on me 24/7, to make sure they’re never without anything, it’s a huge responsibility.” But while raising seven children can certainly be overwhelming, Dulce is always grateful.   

In March of 2022, Dulce found out she was pregnant with their seventh child. This time a baby boy! She initially wanted to apply for coverage on her own but found that trying to navigate TennCare being a Spanish speaker was possible, but time-consuming. Dulce turned to TJC once again, and we were able to enroll her baby boy in healthcare, as well as ensure that the rest of the family’s TennCare would be maintained. “When I needed you guys, you were always there. You helped me so much.”  

The Tennessee Justice Center is proud to honor Dulce Maria Ortega as a 2023 Mother of the Year for her determination to ensure her family has the healthcare they need to continue growing and thriving.

Navegar por el sistema TennCare puede ser complejo para una familia con un hijo, y mucho más con siete. Dulce Ortega, de La Vergne, lo sabe mejor que nadie. En 2020, el Centro de Justicia de Tennessee ayudó a Dulce y a su familia a inscribirse en TennCare, incluyendo su bebé en camino, y les ayudó a conseguir el reembolso de sus facturas médicas. Esto permitió que sus hijos tuvieran acceso a la atención médica física y mental que necesitaban. 

Dulce y su familia llevan dieciocho años en Tennessee. Les encanta donde viven y la vida que han construido aquí. Cuando llegaron por primera vez a los Estados Unidos, tanto Dulce como su marido trabajaban, pero pronto, ser empleada a tiempo completo en un restaurante y madre a tiempo completo se convirtió en una carga demasiado pesado. Para compensar, su marido Ismael hace horas extras en su trabajo para mantener a la familia.   

Tennessee ha demostrado ser un lugar estupendo para que viva una familia tan cariñosa. Dulce y su familia pasan mucho tiempo juntos, yendo al parque, a la iglesia y disfrutando del aire libre en familia. Los fines de semana, a los niños, que Dulce describe como "alegres y despreocupados", les encanta jugar al fútbol en el jardín. 

Ser madre ha significado el mundo para Dulce. "Ser madre es muy difícil, pero algo muy bonito. Cuidar de ellos, que dependan de mí 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana, asegurarme de que nunca les falte de nada, es una responsabilidad enorme." Pero aunque criar a siete hijos puede ser ciertamente abrumador, Dulce siempre está agradecida.   

En marzo de 2022, Dulce descubrió que estaba embarazada de su séptimo hijo. Esta vez, un niño. Inicialmente quería solicitar cobertura por su cuenta, pero se dio cuenta de que tratar de navegar por TennCare siendo hispanohablante era posible, pero consumía mucho tiempo. Dulce recurrió a TJC una vez más, y pudimos inscribir a su bebé en la atención médica, así como asegurar que se mantuviera el TennCare del resto de la familia. "Cuando los necesité, ustedes siempre estuvieron ahí. Me ayudasteis mucho".  

Tennessee Justice Center se enorgullece de honrar a Dulce María Ortega como Madre del Año 2023 por su determinación de garantizar que su familia tenga la atención médica que necesita para seguir creciendo y prosperando.
