Briefing on Congressional Threats to Medicaid & SNAP

The catastrophe we’ve been worried about since November is about to happen! Congress has committed to slashing Medicaid by at least $880 billion AND the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP aka “food stamps”) by $230 billion. According to the Census, 12% of Tennessee households are experiencing food insecurity and high food prices. KFF also states that 83 million Americans, particularly those with special health care needs and low-income, rely on Medicaid. Cuts to SNAP and Medicaid will weaken the safety net and undermine the health and nutrition of millions of Americans who rely on these programs, including the elderly, nearly half of all children, as well as people with disabilities. Congress is deciding in the next few weeks how to implement these destructive plans, so we must take action to protect these programs.
