Mother Overcomes Addiction Because of TennCare Medicaid

Research shows that only one in four people recovering from substance use disorders avoid relapse, and fewer than one in five outpatient participants stay sober for a full year. Destiny Thompson is part of the determined minority who has beaten those odds.

At 33, Destiny Thompson has entirely rewritten the course of her life. For 18 years, Destiny struggled with opioid addiction. Her battle led her in and out of jail, and it eventually cost her custody of her children. The heartbreak of losing her kids set her on a new path.

After being released on parole from jail last year, Destiny gradually pieced her life back together. Reentering society following incarceration is a difficult and overwhelming process. Formerly incarcerated people often face social stigma which makes it especially difficult to land a job and secure housing. However, Destiny gracefully tackled essential tasks many take for granted. She secured a driver’s license, found housing, retrieved her Social Security card, and landed a job.

In just eighteen months, Destiny achieved sobriety, regained legal custody of her five children, and rediscovered a purpose she once thought was lost. She now works long hours at a restaurant and volunteers at a halfway house that supports others on the path to recovery. As a single mother to five beautiful kids – ranging from nine months old to 14 years old – Destiny embraces every moment. Whether it be late-night feedings to her infant or day trips to an adventure park, she cherishes it all. She holds the quiet, “in-between stuff” of motherhood close to her heart.

Throughout her recovery, TennCare – Tennessee's Medicaid Program – served as a reliable source of care and stability. Destiny is enrolled in TennCare Medicaid under the caretaker relative eligibility category, a crucial pathway to coverage for low-income caretakers of minor kids. TennCare Medicaid helped Destiny afford post-partum care and medications essential to recovery. Accessible and affordable healthcare gave Destiny strength to overcome addiction and reclaim her life.

Destiny has experienced the harsh realities of addiction, incarceration, and reintegration first-hand. She aspires to be a substance abuse recovery coach or case manager, offering empathy, experience, and guidance to those still in the storm. She is a beacon of hope for other mothers caught in the cycle of addiction. Substance abuse has profound implications for both maternal and fetal health. Mothers deserve support during recovery. They also deserve the opportunity to rebuild their families after achieving sobriety. TennCare supports the medical treatment necessary for mothers to heal and families to thrive again.

Medicaid plays a critical role in helping people recover from addiction. It covers comprehensive treatments and support services, including rehab programs and therapies. It supports mental health care, provides ongoing, long-term support which prevents relapse, and eases the difficult transition back into society. Medicaid is the foundation that makes sustained recovery possible for countless low-income people across the country. When we invest in Medicaid, we invest in a healthier America.
