OUR HISTORY
Founded in 1996 by Michele Johnson and Gordon Bonnyman, the Tennessee Justice Center was created to ensure vulnerable Tennesseans had access to high-quality legal advocacy after federal funding restrictions significantly reduced the ability of legal aid organizations to take on systemic cases. Established by a bipartisan group of civic and community leaders, TJC was built on the belief that every Tennessean deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, secure life.
Over the past three decades, TJC has grown into one of Tennessee's leading public interest law and advocacy organizations. From representing individual families to advancing landmark litigation and policy reforms, TJC has helped shape programs and protections that improve access to healthcare, nutrition, and economic opportunity for hundreds of thousands of Tennesseans.
