On July 1st, the U.S. Senate passed a budget bill that includes the most devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP we’ve seen in our nation's history. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for final approval.
In response, the Tennessee Justice Center (TJC) is hosting a virtual press briefing to break down what sweeping cuts to Medicaid and SNAP could mean for Tennessee—and why the stakes are especially high for rural communities, hospitals, and families across the state.
The proposed legislation includes more than $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. These changes come at a time when Tennessee is already grappling with major challenges—from rising food insecurity to rural hospitals on the brink. According to the UNC Sheps Center, nine rural hospitals across the state are now at serious risk of permanent closure, including facilities in Erwin, Waynesboro, Huntingdon, Martin, Dyersburg,…
