Michele Johnson, Executive Director of the Tennessee Justice Center, released the following statement in response to the release of Tennessee’s Medicaid block grant draft proposal:
TennCare has a troubling track record when it comes to covering kids, and now it wants to make them guinea pigs in a risky experiment that no other state has been reckless enough to try. Half of Tennessee children, including those who are most vulnerable, rely on TennCare for essential health care. We were just in the news for cutting off over 200,000 kids, and the state still doesn’t know whether they were eligible or not.
What is most distressing is that this proposal is all about the state using kids’ health care as a piggy bank. State officials should listen to the many respected national patient advocacy groups that warn that such proposals put patients’ health and safety at risk.
