Pro Bono Opportunities

“The pro bono work that I’ve done with TJC has been some of the most satisfying work that I’ve done as a lawyer. I can think of no better way to fulfill my professional obligation to help give a voice to clients in need than by helping those who are literally fighting for their lives when they deal with TennCare.” –David Cañas, Partner, Harwell Howard Hyne Gabbert & Manner, P.C.

“The TennCare cases we have handled are the most rewarding pro bono work our firm has done in years. The clients are all very cooperative, willing to help in any way, and are extremely appreciative…. The results we have obtained are the most satisfying since in many instances it impacts an entire family, not just one individual.” –David Taylor, Partner, Bradley Arant Boult Cummings

Types of Cases

Attorneys who agree to work with our clients pro bono will have the opportunity to represent low-income Tennesseans in TennCare appeals. There are two main categories of appeals that our clients face:

1. Delay appeals: These appeals involve individuals who have been wrongfully denied TennCare or who have been approved for TennCare but with the wrong effective date of coverage, leaving them with huge medical bills that should be covered by TennCare.

2. Service appeals:  These appeals involve individuals who are already on TennCare but have experienced problems getting their medical services.

Hearings are held by phone, so the pro bono attorney need not live in the same geographic area as the client.

Throughout your entire pro bono experience, TJC attorneys will help you with ongoing technical support and strategic advice.

CLE Trainings

TJC frequently hosts free Continuing Legal Education trainings across the state. Trainees must agree to accept one referral from TJC and to represent that individual pro bono.  Past referrals have included cases involving a 39 year old mother being told she had to move to a nursing home, a child with behavioral problems being denied mental health treatment, and a young girl whose home nursing hours, which allowed her to remain home with her family, were set to be cut.  These are cases where your actions will have a direct and enormous impact on the lives of your clients.
