Public Charge, Protected Areas, and Boosting Immigrant Access to Safety Net Programs

The US Department of Homeland Security has started taking steps to reverse the chilling effects left by previous immigration policies. Two positive changes are the new proposed Public Charge rule released in February and the Protected Areas memo released in October 2021 which details the limitations on immigration enforcement activity at and near community spaces that provide vital services for families. Both policies are steps in the right direction to improve immigrant enrollment and the usage of safety net programs available to them.

Join the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition and the Tennessee Justice Center as we explore DHS’s updated policies on public charge and protected areas and explore safety net programs available to immigrant families.
