Grandparents as Caregivers
Thursday, September 29
In Tennessee an estimated 77,000 grandparents are raising grandchildren, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many live on little or no income and are often forced to choose between basic necessities like food and prescription drugs. Grandparents who do not have enough money for food will feed their grandchildren while they go hungry. Food assistance programs like SNAP, school meals, and WIC are available to help ease the cost of groceries for families. However, many seniors face barriers when applying for the programs like limited or no technology access and difficulties submitting documents. Join us for a conversation on the barriers that grandparents face when applying for benefits; learn about program changes that can be made to better serve grandparents and advocate with us to improve access for Tennessee grandparents.
