Can I Get TennCare?

Only some people can get TennCare. The rules are complicated. Here is a list of people who may get TennCare.

  • Children and young adults under 21
  • Women who are pregnant
  • Single parents or caretakers of a minor child (The child must live with you and be a relative.)
  • Two-parent families with a minor child living at home when one of the parents:
    • Has lost a job or had work hours cut, or
    • Has a health or mental health problem expected to last 30 days
  • Women who need treatment for breast or cervical cancer
  • People who get an SSI check (Supplemental Security Income)
  • People who stopped getting SSI (Supplemental Security Income). If you've gotten at least one SSI check since November 13, 1987, while living in Tennessee, you should be able to get TennCare. You don’t have to be getting SSI now.
  • Some people who have gotten both an SSI check and a Social Security check in the same month at least once since April, 1977, and who still get a Social Security check.
  • People who live in nursing homes or get home health services in their home, such as private duty nursing or services through a home and community based waiver.

Are you in one of these groups? You might get TennCare.

Your income and assets (things you own) also matter. The home you live in won’t count as an asset. Sometimes one car does not count. If you are in one of these groups AND your income AND assets meet the guidelines, you can get TennCare.

If you think you might fit in one of these groups, apply as soon as you can. You can apply by going to your county Department of Human Services (Food Stamp) office, or by faxing an application to DHS.

You can get the application from DHS or by going to their website and downloading the application. Look at the DHS website to find out how to fax or where to mail your application.

Please call or email us if you want to know more.
