Are you confused by a letter you got from TennCare or DHS?

DHS and TennCare send lots of letters. They call these letters “notices.” These letters can be very confusing. It’s not you. The letters are just confusing! If you don’t understand a letter, we might be able to help.

Why did they send you a letter? DHS and TennCare send letters for lots of reasons. Here are some reasons you might get a letter:

Did you apply for TennCare?

  • You should get a letter saying who in your household gets TennCare and who doesn’t.

Are you on TennCare?

  • You might get a letter asking you to come to your local DHS office to give updated information.
  • You might get a letter about changes in your benefits.
  • You might get a letter saying TennCare will not pay for the medical services you or your doctor asked for.
  • You might get a letter saying you or someone in your household can no longer get TennCare.

If you have applied for Families First…

• You might get a letter saying who in your household is or is not able to be on Families First.

If you are on Families First…

  • You might get a letter asking you to contact your caseworker or come to your local DHS office to give updated information.
  • You might get a Personal Responsibility Plan (PRP) to sign and mail to your caseworker. A PRP is a list of the things you agree to do while on Families First.
  • You might get a letter saying you did not do something you said you would do in your PRP, or that you missed an activity.
  • You might get a letter saying you or someone in your household is losing Families First.

If you have filed an appeal…

  • You might get a letter letting you know your appeal was received.
  • You might get a letter saying that DHS or TennCare looked at your appeal and will not give you a hearing.
  • You might get a letter letting you know you will have a hearing. You should also get a letter with the date, time, and location of your hearing, and a list of places where you might be able to get free legal help.
