Susanne has recently returned home after six years away from her native Nashville.
She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, receiving a B.A. in International Relations and a Minor in Spanish after spending her junior year in Mendoza, Argentina. She then embarked on a two-year tour with the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa, where she participated in the Girls’ Education and Empowerment project, living out the Gender and Development Theory she learned about in college. Another formative experience included volunteering with the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center in Decatur, GA, where she assisted rape survivors and learned about the systemic challenges these survivors face.
Susanne joined TJC to address and challenge systemic barriers of another type - those to health care by foster children. Her insights and experience from two years of community outreach work in West Africa inform her work in advocating for and educating our clients in middle Tennessee.
Being back in her hometown, Susanne is focusing her energies on appreciating all that she has come home to. She tutors a young refugee in English through the Nashville Adult Literacy Council, continuing her international exchange here in Nashville. She also likes to travel; having been to four continents, she plans to get to the other three someday.
